In my Father’s house
|
Luke 2:46-52
|
These are the first recorded Words spoken by the Son of God who came in the flesh.
Jesus was with Mary and Joseph as they travelled for the yearly Passover festival at Jerusalem. On their journey back home, suddenly the parents discovered that their son was not in the travelers' company. They rushed back to Jerusalem to find out where he was. They might have asked every known person on the way, "Did you see our son? We thought he was travelling with us. He is not in our group." Someone said, "Yes I saw a young boy in the temple. But I am not sure if he is your son." Anyway the distressed parents went straight to the temple. There he was in the midst of the teachers listening to them and asking them questions! While his parents were astonished, the mother asked him, "Son, Why have you treated us so? Behold your father and I have been searching for you in great distress." The parents received a significant reply: "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?" From the verses following we understand that the twelve year old boy went back with his parents and was submissive to them; but he saw only God as his Father and not Joseph. His whole aim and mission were evident in these words: "that I must be in my Father’s House." To walk in, to live in, to deal in, to think about, and to speak about his Father’s affairs was his sole aim and mission. In this he found fulfillment for his longing heart.
Jesus, the Son of God was like us humans by his human birth. And we have become the children of God through our rebirth in the Holy Spirit. Therefore as children of God should we not also have the same mind as that of Jesus? Therefore it goes without saying that our highest mission, our holiest duty, our deepest requirement, and our heart’s desire must be the same as those of our heavenly Father. His ways are our ways, His thoughts are our thoughts, His work is our work, and His goal is our goal. How often other thoughts hover over our heads and try to control us, to steal our time and to spoil our commitment, to rob our strength and to distract us from the goal God has set for us! No wonder our life runs empty sometimes, void and unfulfilled. May the Spirit of God help us to live in His house so that we may have His mind to do His will and partake of His eternal blessings.
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus. Phil.2:5
